Specification without risk

"As long as the waterproofing industry is price driven there will be an underlying risk for the
end user."
One of the great critics of false economies, and false economics, was John Ruskin. Two of his statements seem particularly apposite to waterproofing, though by no means exclusively.

First: It is unwise to pay too much, but it is worse to pay to little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money-that's all. When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought is incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do."

Second: There is hardly anything in the world which someone can't make a little worse and sell a little cheaper and people who consider price alone are this mans lawful prey."

Waterproofing tends to be one of the most abused areas of a building project. Market statistics indicate that the cost of waterproofing is less than one half of a percent of the total cost of the building and yet sixty percent of all first-year callbacks are related to waterproofing. It is a serious mistake to install waterproofing on a lowest price basis.

All too often the correct professional specification is disregarded in favour of inferior materials and the use of Non-Licensed Contractors. Some of these materials have no verifiable track record in the harsh climatic conditions experienced in South Africa. This may be driven by cost cutting exercises resulting in quality being substituted by price. The original design considerations are neglected, without reference to the professionals. Quality should not be substituted by price, as the consequence can be extreme.

Design of the structure, careful material selection and detailing with workmanship remain the most important factors in ensuring a watertight structure. Experience has shown that often the waterproofing design is considered at too late a stage in the project resulting in using a "best possible" solution to an existing problem rather than the "best" solution.

Work carried out by inexperienced contractors with limited waterproofing knowledge and the use of inferior materials will surely lead to costly rework. This rework can be much more expensive than the original cost, never mind the inconvenience and damage to both structure and reputation. Derbigum makes every attempt to have the design detail optimized at the earliest possible stage, ensuring the professionals can specify from its range of superior quality Special Polyester reinforced products.

Derbigum has maintained its commitment to excellence by developing high grade waterproofing systems, which consist of three essential ingredients: correct design, quality material and workmanship of the highest standard. The Derbigum Triangle of excellence is crucial to successful waterproofing applications.

Licensed Derbigum Contractors are carefully selected according to experience, workmanship, financial strength and are monitored to ensure superior workmanship.

An additional element is that Derbigum can provide design and on-site project services for specific contracts.
